Start with a camera
Nobody can tell what a sewer line needs from the cleanout. A camera goes down the line and shows every foot of it on a screen, with a locator to mark where each problem sits in the yard. Any quote for sewer work should come with that footage. If it does not, ask for it.
When cleaning is enough
If the camera shows roots at the joints but the pipe itself is round, lined up, and unbroken, the line can usually be kept clear with hydro jetting once a year or so. That is maintenance, not a repair, and it is a small fraction of the cost of digging.
When a spot repair is the answer
One cracked section, one joint that has shifted, or one spot where roots have broken through can be dug up and replaced without touching the rest. On most Downey lots that means one hole in the lawn or the parkway, not a trench across the yard.
When replacement is the honest call
- The pipe is broken or collapsed in several places
- A long section has sagged and holds standing water
- The line has been spot-repaired more than once and keeps failing somewhere new
- The clay has deteriorated along most of its length
What to ask before you sign
Five questions that protect you on any sewer quote:
- Can I see the video, and can I keep a copy?
- Where exactly is each problem, in feet from the cleanout?
- Is this a repair of one section or the whole line, and why?
- Does the price include the permit, the inspection, and putting the yard or concrete back?
- Is the work warrantied?
Get a second look
If you were quoted a full replacement in Downey and did not see footage that supports it, call Mickey before you sign. He will run his own camera, show you what is there, and quote the fix that matches it. Second opinions are free, and One Hour Plumbing Service is based next door in Norwalk.
